Voice & Swallowing

Voice changes and trouble swallowing can make talking and eating difficult. They can also be signs of an underlying medical condition. Our speech-language pathology team works closely with our ENT team to evaluate voice and swallowing function and develop personalized treatment plans. Voice therapy may help patients experiencing hoarseness, vocal fatigue, vocal strain or changes in voice quality, while swallowing therapy focuses on improving safe and effective swallowing function.

Videostroboscopy

Videostroboscopy is an advanced diagnostic procedure that allows our team to closely examine the movement and function of the vocal cords. It may be recommended for patients with hoarseness, vocal cord nodules or polyps, vocal fold paralysis, professional voice concerns or persistent voice changes. Using special technology including a camera and strobe light, we can capture detailed images of the vocal folds during speech and identify abnormalities that may not be visible during a standard examination. This helps us to accurately diagnose voice disorders and create targeted therapies.

Laryngeal Obstruction & Disordered Breathing

Breathing difficulties are not always caused by lung disease or asthma. Some patients experience breathing challenges due to disorders involving the larynx (voice box) or upper airway. These conditions can cause shortness of breath, throat tightness, noisy breathing and exercise-related breathing difficulties. Our speech pathology team specializes in evaluating and treating laryngeal obstruction and other forms of disordered breathing through targeted breathing retraining techniques and behavioral therapy.

Our speech pathology team at Atreus Medical has specialized training to treat patients with upper airway disorders including cough and shortness of breath. When diagnosing and treating a speech condition, we evaluate you for other conditions that may contribute to your symptoms. Working collaboratively with our ENT and pulmonary specialists, our speech pathology team helps patients learn strategies to improve airflow, reduce symptoms and regain confidence during physical activity and everyday life.

We see pediatric patients for speech, language and articulation concerns. We also accept pediatric patients for upper airway disorders such as voice concerns, chronic cough, vocal cord dysfunction or Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO) upon referral from their pediatrician, ENT or pulmonology provider.
